10 Day Country Routes

Overview

Enjoy the tranquility and scenery of the Route 62 and the Garden Route. Top it off with a safari at the Addo Elephant Park. Highlights of this tour include a optional cycle ride through the winelands of Stellenbosch, a visit to Oudtshoorn, Cango Caves and De Zeekoe Guests farm, a ferry ride and walk on the Featherbed excursion in Knysna. The tour will also visit Cape Agulhas, the southern most tip of Africa where you can take walks for miles along the beach. Tour starts and ends in the Cape Town area.

Itinerary

Day 1: Winelands wine tour

 

Stellenbosch

A blend of historical architecture, student life, epicurean delights and oak-lined avenues, Stellenbosch is a picturesque university town surrounded by mountains and vineyards. A walking tour of the town centre allows visitors to take in its beautifully preserved Cape Dutch and Victorian architecture, as well as the many enticing art galleries, craft shops, clothing boutiques and gift stores, while foodies may prefer indulging in mouth-watering cuisine and fine wines at one of the chic restaurants or buzzing bistros. Stellenbosch is also the ideal base from which to explore the renowned local wine route, boasting a high proportion of the country’s leading wine estates.

Day Itinerary

Collect Clients in Cape Town or at airport and start day with a wine tour of the Stellenbosch / Paarl Winelands. Enjoy spectacular views and fantastic wine in the world’s most beautiful winelands. Lunch will be had on one of the famous wine estates. Dinner arrangements will be made for the clients at one of the many great restaurants in Stellenbosch.

Day 2: Route 62 and Montagu

 

Route 62

Route 62 might market itself as the longest Wine Route in the world, but that’s definitely not all there is to it. Lush greenery and fertile valleys form a stark contrast against the semi-desert of the Klein Karoo while towering mountains and their rivers and streams provide an awe-inspiring backdrop throughout. Some of the renowned attractions visitors will spot as they follow the route are the winelands of the Breede River Valley, the majestic Swartberg mountains, the Cango Caves and ostrich farms of Oudtshoorn, and the fruit orchards of the Langkloof Valley.

Day Itinerary

Today we start our journey on the Route 62 through the longest wine route in the world. Quaint towns and a change in landscape around every corner await us on our route to Montagu. We will go for a walk in the area and spend the evening at the well known Montagu Hotel and enjoy dinner at this iconic establishment.

Day 3: Oudtshoorn, Cango Caves and De Zeekoe Guest Farm & Reserve

 

Oudtshoorn

Oudtshoorn is famous for its ostriches and the magnificent Cango Caves. Located along the renowned Route 62, which takes motorists past one awe-inspiring sight after another, Oudtshoorn is known as the Ostrich Capital of the World: these huge birds are almost as common as people in this charming town. Other than ostriches and the wonderful feathers and meat they provide, the Oudtshoorn area also boasts the spectacular Cango Caves; the largest show cave system in Africa, permeated with sparkling stalactites and stalagmites and captivating rock formations.

Day Itinerary

Today we depart Montagu after breakfast and continue along the Route 62 to Oudtshoorn. Here we will visit the Cango Caves to explore this magnificent wonder of Nature. You can choose to do the normal tour or the Adventure tour which includes some crawling through tight tunnels to explore the deeper reaches of the cave system.
After the Caves tour there is an optional visit to Safari Ostrich farm before we drive through to De Zeekoe Guest Farm for the evening.

Day 4: Knysna area beach and forest

 

Knysna

Nestled between the imposing Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean and surrounded by world-renowned forests, Knysna offers a wealth of activities for visitors. The beautiful lagoon and more than eight beaches provide opportunities to swim, surf, canoe, yacht, jet-ski, boat, fish, walk on soft sand and take ferry rides. Various markets offer organic goods, delicious food, indigenous plants and a social atmosphere. Mountains, valleys, lakes, forests and streams are ready to be explored. The region isn’t known as the “Garden of Eden” for nothing! A birding route is available for avid bird watchers. World class golf courses are at your doorstep. And of course the area is famous for the Knysna Heads and delicious oysters.

Day Itinerary

This morning it is an early start with a Meerkat Tour on the farm. These tours commence only at sunrise, are dependent on fair weather, since these little creatures will not venture outside their burrows on cold and rainy days. Meerkats are part of the so-called Shy 5 which also includes the bat-eared fox, the aardvark, porcupine and aardwolf. The meerkat tours last between 2-3 hours.
After the tour we will depart Oudtshoorn and drive the Outenique Hop and over the pass to Knysna where we will spend the next 2 days in this beautiful seaside village with indigenous forests, a beautiful lagoon and stunning coastline. There are many options for the afternoon to choose from, from a forest walk or canoe trip to visiting many of the beaches or spending some time at Monkey World (open air primate facility with free roaming primates) or Birds of Paradise.

Day 5: Knysna and Featherbed Nature reserve

 

Day Itinerary

After breakfast we will do the Featherbed Nature reserve tour which includes a ferry ride over the lagoon to the Knysna Heads. Here we take a tractor ride uo to the top of the heads for spectacular views of the coastline on the one side and teh lagoon and town on the other. From here we will walk the trail down to the ancient Milkwood forest and have lunch before departing back to the harbour with the Ferry.
Afternoon spend at leisure or guide can organise an excursion for you.

Featherbed Nature Reserve

 

Featherbed Nature Reserve
Featherbed is a privately-owned, registered Nature Reserve and a South African Heritage Site, No.59. It is a pristine piece of paradise situated on the Western Head of Knysna and is accessible by ferry only. In order to protect the splendour of the natural beauty, access to the Reserve is controlled. Numbers are limited and visits are only permitted in the company of the Reserve’s specialist guides.
This 4-hour excursion departs daily and reservations are essential. It is a wonderful outing for all ages and fitness levels. Good walking shoes are recommended and remember to bring your camera, hats, and sunblock in summer and a warm jacket for the ferry trip in winter. The nature reserve offers Knysna adventure activities not to be missed. A perfect outdoor family holiday activity to be enjoyed by both young and old.

Day 6: Zuurberg Mountain Village and Greater Addo area

 

Greater Addo

Stretching from the spectacularly scenic Zuurberg Mountain Range to the beautiful Sundays River, the Greater Addo area is known for its malaria-free big game viewing areas. It is an area rich in history and diverse in culture featuring lush citrus valleys, rolling dunes and abundant fauna and flora. Easily accessible from the large city of Port Elizabeth, Greater Addo boasts numerous private game reserves, which are home to the Big Five. Must-see sites include the renowned Addo Elephant National Park, hosting one of the most densely populated elephant herds in the world; and the thriving Nanaga Farm Stall known for its delicious pies. The Greater Addo area offers an exciting array of activities ranging from hiking, horse riding, fishing, canoeing and mountain biking; to bird watching, game safaris and 4×4 off road adventures.

Day Itinerary

After breakfast we will depart on our drive further along the famous Garden Route.
Some highlights along the way include the optional Boukrans Bungy Jump and the Tsitsikamma forest and Storm river mouth that can be visited today. The drive is approximately 4 hours and lunch will be had along the way. With activity stops en route.
We will end the day at Zuurberg Mountain village close to Addo Elephant park.

Storms River Mouth
The mouth of the Storms River is surrounded by national parks and accommodation, and offers plenty of fun activities. This is where the Otter Trail and Dolphin Trail start as well as numerous smaller hikes. Other activities include crossing the mouth via a suspension bridge, dining at the restaurant overlooking this beautiful site, and swimming and snorkelling in the sea.
Bloukrans Bungee Jump
If it’s adrenalin you’re after, look no further than the Bloukrans Bridge. At 216 metres high and with a 7 second free fall, Bloukrans is the world’s highest bungy jump. Your experience of the highest bridge in Africa doesn’t have to include a bungy jump, however, as you can also participate in a walking tour of the structure.
Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours
Stormsriver Adventures is a rurally based Eco adventure Company situated in the heart of the majestic Tsitsikamma Forest region aptly named “THE GARDEN OF THE GARDEN ROUTE”.
The company boasts adventure activities which include the world renowned Tsitsikamma Treetop Canopy Tour, Tsitsikamma Forest Tour (Woodcutters Journey), Hiking Trails, Team Building, Local Crafting Facility and a Catering Facility / Restaurant.The Tsitsikamma Treetop Canopy Tour is the first of its kind in Africa.
Safety is paramount and the system has been built to civil engineering standards. Imagine the Tsitsikamma Forest 30 meters above, as you gently glide on 10 slides to 10 platforms high up in Giant trees. The platforms provide an unbelievable view of this enchanting New World. Spend a few minutes relaxing while your Guides enthusiastically explain the ecology of the forest – pointing out different trees and magnificent giant ferns way below. You may even sight the Knysna Loerie and Narina Trojan.
The region Tsitsikamma lies between the sea and the Tsitsikamma Mountains and stretches from the Bloukrans River in the West to Clarkson in the East. Beautiful indigenous forest, protected by the State, is home to centuries old trees such as Yellowwood, Stinkwood, Hard Pear, Ironwood, Kamassi and many others.
Tsitsikamma is a khoi word meaning “place of abundant or sparkling water”. The region stretches from the Bloukrans River in the west to Eerste Rivier in the east, is bordered on the north by the imposing Tsitsikamma Mountains and in the south by the Indian Ocean.
Stormsriver Adventures has formed a non profit organization, NPO number 077-407-NPO, this is already established comprising of 2 community representatives and 2 company representatives to establish priority projects within the community of Stormsriver.
The Stormsriver Adventures Community Projects (SRACP) initiative has been in operation for a number of years on an informal basis in the village of Storms River, a very impoverished rural village. To date the projects have been totally funded by Stormsriver Adventures.
The major criteria identified are:
Children – Welfare (feeding scheme)
HIV AIDS – support and excursions
Elderly – clothing distribution
Poorest of the poor – clothing distribution
Job creation for unemployed youth. – Skills development. Based on the 5 areas priorities are defined as to which projects we can afford to initiate and support.

Day 7: Full day open vehicle Addo Safari

 

Day Itinerary

Today we will do a guided safari drive into the Addo Elephant park.
Departs from Zuurberg at 08h00

We will return to Zuurberg at about 18h00 and have dinner at the hotel.

As South Africa’s third largest national park, the Addo National Elephant Park offers a truly unforgettable safari experience. Day 8: Garden Route and Plettenberg Bay – Robberg walk

 

Plettenberg Bay

The Portuguese explorers called it the Beautiful Bay, and it’s easy to see why – Plettenberg Bay is a picturesque, charming town with miles of pristine beaches, tranquil lagoons, clean rivers, indigenous forests and a dramatic rocky peninsula. Playground to the wealthy, beach mansions overlook the Indian Ocean, often dotted with luxury yachts, while leisure time is given over to polo and golf, among other things. However, all kinds of visitors will feel at peace here as simply swimming in the warm water on a safe beach is a great way to experience the beauty of Plettenberg Bay.

Day Itinerary

After a hearty breakfast we will depart the Addo area and start our journey back towards Cape Town. We will drive the coastal route and stop at sights that we have not seen on our way up. We will arrive in Plettenberg Bay early afternoon. Afternoon can be spent walking in Robberg Nature reserve with amazing coastal views or just relaxing at the swimming pool or expansive beach.

Robberg Peninsula
The sheltered waters that make Plettenberg Bay such an ecologically rich coastal area and a prime water sports destination owe much to the landmark rocky headland of the Robberg Peninsula. The peninsula is a beautiful wilderness area that is famed for its coastal walks, abundant marine and bird life, and amazing sea views.

Day 9: Cape Agulhas, the Southern tip of Africa

 

Cape South Coast

The fynbos of the Cape meets the cold seas of at the southernmost tip of Africa. Highlights include the quaint fishing village of Aniston and a spot where all of Africa is behind you, Aghulas.

Day Itinerary

We will depart at leisure and continue on the Scenic Coastal route for a while before we start driving through farm lands along the Langeberge and then take the turn off to Cape Agulhas, the most Southerly Tip of Africa. We will visit the southern point of Africa and then check in to our accommodation. Afternoon can be spent relaxing or strolling along the rocky coast in the area of the hotel.

Day 10: Back to Cape Town via Bettys Bay coastal Route

Depart Agulhas at leisure and depart on our last day of the tour. Optional Whale watching tour available in Hermanus in whale season.

Hermanus Whale Watching
Every year, thousands of local and international visitors come to Hermanus for the best land-based whale watching in the world. Between the months of July and November, up to 100 Southern Right Whales visit the town’s protected waters and can be easily spotted from the cliff tops above, often coming as close as ten metres from the coast.
Stony Point – Penguins
This is a great place to see these comical little chaps in their tuxedos. The penguin colony at Stony Point started in 1982 and is one of only three mainland colonies. Due to human and predator disturbances the Stony Point area was fenced off in 1987 and soon cormorants started to breed here.

The Zuurberg Mountain Village is a historic 1861 country hotel bordering the Addo Elephant National Park with 360° mountain views. After the devastating fire in 2008 Zuurberg has been reconstructed and the main building totally renovated to a good 4 star level.
