8 Day Country Routes

Overview

This tour is a one way trip from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and is a perfect way to experience the Garden Route and more. The adventurous can join the Guided Cycle tour into the Stellenbosch Winelands, otherwise you can opt to visit the magnificent winelands of Stellenbosch with a private tour by car before heading onto the Route 62 to Montagu. This semi arid region is known for its dried fruit and charming little villages

Explore the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn and see a Meerkat family in their natural habitat. Enjoy the coastal area of Knysna with a ferry ride on the lagoon and beautiful walk along the Coast before heading to Addo Elephant Park for a safari. Tour ends in Port Elizabeth.

Day 1: Winelands wine tour

 

Stellenbosch

A blend of historical architecture, student life, epicurean delights and oak-lined avenues, Stellenbosch is a picturesque university town surrounded by mountains and vineyards. A walking tour of the town centre allows visitors to take in its beautifully preserved Cape Dutch and Victorian architecture, as well as the many enticing art galleries, craft shops, clothing boutiques and gift stores, while foodies may prefer indulging in mouth-watering cuisine and fine wines at one of the chic restaurants or buzzing bistros. Stellenbosch is also the ideal base from which to explore the renowned local wine route, boasting a high proportion of the country’s leading wine estates.

Day Itinerary

Collect Clients in Cape Town or at the airport and start the day with a cycle tour of Stellenbosch or you can do the private guided wine tour of the Stellenbosch / Paarl Winelands with our guide and vehicle. Learn more of the area and wine making while enjoying spectacular views and fantastic wine in the world’s most beautiful winelands. All tastings are included. Lunch will be had on one of the famous wine estates.

Dinner arrangements will be made for the clients at one of the many great restaurants in Stellenbosch.

Day 2: Route 62 and Montagu

 

Route 62

Route 62 might market itself as the longest Wine Route in the world, but that’s definitely not all there is to it. Lush greenery and fertile valleys form a stark contrast against the semi-desert of the Klein Karoo while towering mountains and their rivers and streams provide an awe-inspiring backdrop throughout. Some of the renowned attractions visitors will spot as they follow the route are the winelands of the Breede River Valley, the majestic Swartberg mountains, the Cango Caves and ostrich farms of Oudtshoorn, and the fruit orchards of the Langkloof Valley.

Day Itinerary

Self drive clients can collect their car this morning in Stellenbosch. With the Guided tour, we will start our journey on the Route 62 through the longest wine route in the world. Quaint towns and a change in landscape around every corner await you on route to Montagu. Go for a walk in the area and spend the evening at the well known Montagu Hotel and enjoy dinner at this iconic establishment.

Day 3: Oudtshoorn, Cango Caves and De Zeekoe Guest Farm & Reserve

 

Oudtshoorn

Oudtshoorn is famous for its ostriches and the magnificent Cango Caves. Located along the renowned Route 62, which takes motorists past one awe-inspiring sight after another, Oudtshoorn is known as the Ostrich Capital of the World: these huge birds are almost as common as people in this charming town. Other than ostriches and the wonderful feathers and meat they provide, the Oudtshoorn area also boasts the spectacular Cango Caves; the largest show cave system in Africa, permeated with sparkling stalactites and stalagmites and captivating rock formations.

Day Itinerary

Depart Montagu after breakfast and continue along the Route 62 to Oudtshoorn. Visit the Cango Caves to explore this magnificent wonder of Nature. You can choose to do the normal tour or the Adventure tour which includes some crawling through tight tunnels to explore the deeper reaches of the cave system.
After the Caves tour there is an optional visit to Safari Ostrich farm to learn more about breeding of Ostriches before we drive through to De Zeekoe Guest Farm for the evening.

Day 4: Knysna area beach and forest

 

Knysna

Nestled between the imposing Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean and surrounded by world-renowned forests, Knysna offers a wealth of activities for visitors. The beautiful lagoon and more than eight beaches provide opportunities to swim, surf, canoe, yacht, jet-ski, boat, fish, walk on soft sand and take ferry rides. Various markets offer organic goods, delicious food, indigenous plants and a social atmosphere. Mountains, valleys, lakes, forests and streams are ready to be explored. The region isn’t known as the “Garden of Eden” for nothing! A birding route is available for avid bird watchers. World class golf courses are at your doorstep. And of course the area is famous for the Knysna Heads and delicious oysters.

Day Itinerary

This morning it is an early start with a Meerkat Tour on the farm. These tours commence only at sunrise, are dependent on fair weather, since these little creatures will not venture outside their burrows on cold and rainy days. Meerkats are part of the so-called Shy 5 which also includes the bat-eared fox, the aardvark, porcupine and aardwolf. The meerkat tours last between 2-3 hours.
After the tour, depart Oudtshoorn and drive the Outenique Hop and over the pass to Knysna where the next 2 days will be spent in this beautiful seaside village with indigenous forests, a beautiful lagoon and stunning coastline. There are many options for the afternoon to choose from, like a forest walk in Knysna forest to spot the Knysna Loerie or a canoe trips along the river through the forest. You can also decide to visit many beautiful beaches like Noetzie with its castles or Buffelbaai with its long sprawling beach. If there are children in the group, Monkey World (open air primate facility with free roaming primates) or Birds of Paradise might be a worthwhile experience.

Day 5: Knysna and Featherbed Nature reserve

 

Day Itinerary

After breakfast the Featherbed Nature reserve tour is on the program, which includes a ferry ride over the lagoon to the Knysna Heads, then a tractor ride up to the top of the heads for spectacular views of the coastline on the one side and the lagoon and town on the other. From here you walk down the trail to the ancient Milkwood forest and have lunch before departing back to the harbour with the Ferry.

Afternoon spend at leisure or the guide can organise an excursion for you like a hike or cycle tour, kayaking trip, Paragliding in Sedgefield and much more.

Featherbed Nature Reserve

 

Featherbed Nature Reserve
Featherbed is a privately-owned, registered Nature Reserve and a South African Heritage Site, No.59. It is a pristine piece of paradise situated on the Western Head of Knysna and is accessible by ferry only. In order to protect the splendour of the natural beauty, access to the Reserve is controlled. Numbers are limited and visits are only permitted in the company of the Reserve’s specialist guides.
This 4-hour excursion departs daily and reservations are essential. It is a wonderful outing for all ages and fitness levels. Good walking shoes are recommended and remember to bring your camera, hats, and sunblock in summer and a warm jacket for the ferry trip in winter. The nature reserve offers Knysna adventure activities not to be missed. A perfect outdoor family holiday activity to be enjoyed by both young and old.

Day 6: Explore the Garden Route area

 

Greater Addo

Stretching from the spectacularly scenic Zuurberg Mountain Range to the beautiful Sundays River, the Greater Addo area is known for its malaria-free big game viewing areas. It is an area rich in history and diverse in culture featuring lush citrus valleys, rolling dunes and abundant fauna and flora. Easily accessible from the large city of Port Elizabeth, Greater Addo boasts numerous private game reserves, which are home to the Big Five. Must-see sites include the renowned Addo Elephant National Park, hosting one of the most densely populated elephant herds in the world; and the thriving Nanaga Farm Stall known for its delicious pies. The Greater Addo area offers an exciting array of activities ranging from hiking, horse riding, fishing, canoeing and mountain biking; to bird watching, game safaris and 4×4 off road adventures.

Day Itinerary

After breakfast, drive further along the famous Garden Route with its many sights and things to do.
Some optional activities and highlights along the way include the optional Boukrans Bungy Jump and the Tsitsikamma forest and Storm river mouth that can be visited today. The drive is approximately 4 hours and lunch will be had along the way.
We will end the day at Zuurberg Mountain village close to Addo Elephant park.

Storms River Mouth
The mouth of the Storms River is surrounded by national parks and accommodation, and offers plenty of fun activities. This is where the Otter Trail and Dolphin Trail start as well as numerous smaller hikes. Other activities include crossing the mouth via a suspension bridge, dining at the restaurant overlooking this beautiful site, and swimming and snorkelling in the sea.
Bloukrans Bungee Jump
If it’s adrenalin you’re after, look no further than the Bloukrans Bridge. At 216 metres high and with a 7 second free fall, Bloukrans is the world’s highest bungy jump. Your experience of the highest bridge in Africa doesn’t have to include a bungy jump, however, as you can also participate in a walking tour of the structure.
Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours
Stormsriver Adventures is a rurally based Eco adventure Company situated in the heart of the majestic Tsitsikamma Forest region aptly named “THE GARDEN OF THE GARDEN ROUTE”.
The company boasts adventure activities which include the world renowned Tsitsikamma Treetop Canopy Tour, the Treetop Canopy Tour is the first of its kind in Africa.
Safety is paramount and the system has been built to civil engineering standards. Imagine the Tsitsikamma Forest 30 meters above, as you gently glide on 10 slides to 10 platforms high up in Giant trees. The platforms provide an unbelievable view of this enchanting New World. The region Tsitsikamma lies between the sea and the Tsitsikamma Mountains and stretches from the Bloukrans River in the West to Clarkson in the East. Beautiful indigenous forest, protected by the State, is home to centuries old trees such as Yellowwood, Stinkwood, Hard Pear, Ironwood, Kamassi and many others.
Tsitsikamma is a khoi word meaning “place of abundant or sparkling water”.

Day 7: Zuurberg Mountain Village, Greater Addo

 

Day Itinerary

Safari day with a guided safari drive into the Addo Elephant park.

We will return to Zuurberg at about 18h00 and have dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: Departure

 

Day Itinerary

Check out form Zuurberg Mountain Village and drive to Port Elizabeth.
Clients can be dropped at Port Elizabeth airport for a flight to the Kruger Park, Johanneburg or Cape Town.

Clients can also opt to extend their tour with 2 nights 3 days and take the tour back to Cape Town, visiting Jeffreys Bay, Cape Agulhas, the most Southern Point of Africa and then get dropped off in Cape Town.

The Zuurberg Mountain Village is a historic 1861 country hotel bordering the Addo Elephant National Park with 360° mountain views. After the devastating fire in 2008 Zuurberg has been reconstructed and the main building totally renovated to a good 4 star level. Guests are accommodated in our newly built East Cape Edwardian styled Cottages; all of which boast high loft ceilings, 2 private verandahs, air conditioning, black wood furnishings and flooring, a full bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower, and much more. Hotel facilities include a swimming pool, tennis courts, children’s playground, walking trails, restaurant and bar. Whilst activities on offer are horse trails, walking trails, game drives into the Addo Park and Elephant Back Safaris.
